Paul Martin Thank You

Delivered by Hon. David Kilgour,
MP for Edmonton Southeast and Secretary of State (Asia-Pacific)

At the LPAC Annual General Meeting, opening ceremony, Westin Hotel, Calgary

January 31, 2003

Thank you, Paul. Just what we needed to hear!

In a recent issue of Maclean’s, Paul topped a list titled “Who’s Hot in 2003.”

Looking for Canadians with “zip, panache, momentum, fire in the belly and a little pepper in their socks” Maclean’s called him “Tomorrow’s Man” saying he will represent “a sea of change in Canadian politics.”

Paul is known at home and abroad as the “Canadian deficit crusader.” He pulled us back from the economic brink to become the nation with the highest rate of growth and job creation in the G7 this year.

Much of the developing world has benefited from Paul’s economic smarts. In 1999, he was named the inaugural chair of the G-22, which was created to address the challenges involved in managing globalization to the benefit of peoples everywhere.

But Paul has always kept focus on the important issues here at home. In fact, no federal Minister – except for Anne and myself of course – has traveled to Alberta more than Paul – I’m told he’s visited virtually every riding in our province. Albertans appreciate the frank and honest dialogue that always accompany his visits.

Paul says it’s time we make a concerted effort to revive the political enthusiasm of Canadians across the country. I’m glad to see so many Liberals here this evening. MP’s must do a better job of listening to Canadians and must act in the best interests of ALL the regions of this country equally.

On Wednesday, this week, in Leduc, he acknowledged “Canadians are tired of being ruled from a distant eastern city by an elected aristocracy. It’s time Parliament and the democratic process were answerable to the public.”

Human dignity, responsibility, and individual freedom are the major themes of the Liberal Party. We embrace equality of opportunity, enhancement of our unique and diverse cultural community, and the promotion of the Canadian identity around the world.

In closing, hearty congratulations to the LPCA organizers and volunteers! You’ve done a masterful job in pulling this event together. To everyone present, please enjoy the debates, discussion and workshops this weekend. And, try to have a little fun as well.

Fellow Liberals, big breakthroughs are on the horizon. A fresh outlook is in the air. It is an exciting time to be a Liberal!

Thank you.
