25th
Anniversary of the LRT
Remarks
by the Hon. David Kilgour, Member
of Parliament for Edmonton Southeast
and Secretary of State (Asia-Pacific)
Edmonton,
Alberta
April
22, 2003
Mayor Smith, Members of Council,
MLA Vandermeer, ladies and gentlemen,
Friends of the LRT, I’m
very delighted to be here today
to celebrate the 25th
Anniversary of the LRT.
When it opened in 1978, the LRT
marked an important milestone
for our city history. Not
only were we about to celebrate
the Commonwealth Games, with visitors
coming from around the world,
but the architecture and construction
involved in the building of the
LRT also broke important ground.
We were a showcase for innovative
engineering which allowed Edmonton
to be the first city in North
America to have such a modern
transit system.
The LRT was a turning point
for Edmonton. The Commonwealth
Games the World Figure Skating
Championships, the Worlds - our
city has been on the international
stage and we should all be proud
of the best city – no Mr. Mayor,
the greatest city, in the best
province of this great country.
Hearty congratulations to everyone
associated with the LRT over the
last 25 years!
