Celebrating the Inaguration of the
Edmonton Korean Lions Club
Remarks by Hon. David Kilgour
Member of parliament for Edmonton-Southeast
Edmonton Korean Lion Club
May 25th, 2004
Good evening, and
greetings from the Government of Canada!
It’s a great pleasure to
be here on the first Charter night of the
Edmonton Korean Lions Club!
Tonight we have the rare honour of
the presence of the President of the
International Association of Lions Clubs,
Dr.Tae-Sup “TS” Lee of Seoul, Republic
of Korea!
Few Club Charter Nights are attended
by such an illustrious guest.
As you know, Lions have
been a powerful force of goodwill and
community service in and around Edmonton.
The first Lions club in the area, the
Edmonton Host Club, was chartered on June 14th,
1929 – seventy five years ago!
The energy, generosity and devotion
of the Lions can be felt throughout the
city.
The opening of the
Edmonton Korean Lions Club is a great event
in our vibrant, multicultural community.
Their sponsors, the Edmonton Chinese
Lions Club, which serves the inner city with
an emphasis on the Chinese community, have
in their 25 year history contributed over
100 000 hrs and $600 000 to various
projects!
Their achievements are truly
momentous.
As you know, the motto of
the Lions is “We Serve” – a statement
exemplified by the Edmonton Chinese Lions
Club. The
fact that the Edmonton Korean Lions Club
enjoys their sponsorship – not to mention
the presence of Dr.T.S Lee, bodes well for
its own bright future of invaluable
community service.
The formation of this club
demonstrates the commitment of a new
generation in our community to continue a
proud history of service.
With plans for a cultural centre
program, and other projects directed toward
the larger community, the future of the
Edmonton Korean Lions Club, and the
community that they will serve, looks
bright.
Its an honour to be among
you today and I wish you great success in
all your endeavours.
