A Summer Experience Learning French by Mina Deol of Mill Woods Fall 2004 Householder The Summer Language Bursary Program (SLBP) is an intensive French language learning course offered to post-secondary students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. The program provides an opportunity to live and study French for five weeks during the summer in a variety of fine educational institutions across Canada. I was lucky enough to participate in the SLBP program at La Cité Collégiale, a prominent francophone college in our nation’s capital. It was a full and enriching experience as I not only learned French but also utilized my new found linguistic abilities in a variety of social and cultural settings across the city and in Quebec. ![]() I would highly recommend this program to any youth interested in learning French as a second language. It definitely helps to create an awareness and appreciation for the importance of bilingualism in our country and the world that we live in today. Funding for the SLBP is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage and is subsequently allotted by the provincial and territorial jurisdictions. For more information on how to apply, you can contact Alberta Learning at www.learning.gov.ab.ca. Constituent Mina Deol, a psychology student at the University of Alberta, recently spent five weeks in Ottawa learning French.
