May 1, 2005 Media Release
Re: Possibility of a Confidence Vote (Aussi disponible en français) In response to calls and emails from constituents, parliamentarians and the media over the weekend and last week, David Kilgour releases the following statement:
“It is sobering to realize that the present minority government might soon face a similar situation to what Mackenzie King, Arthur Meighen, J. S. Woodsworth and other MPs of the day experienced almost 80 years ago (July 2, 1926), when a difference of one vote caused Meighen’s minority government to fall following a confidence vote.”
“Given the possibility that such a phenomenon could recur later this month, it is all the more important that I continue to weigh the full implications until such time a decision must be made. Accordingly, I will listen carefully to all representations as to what vote would be in the overall best interests of Canadians.”
“Finally, whenever a confidence vote is held, I will be present in the House and voting.”
