The Raoul Wallenberg Research Initiative RWI-70

Dear Friends and Colleagues -

It is now 76 years since Raoul Wallenberg disappeared in the Soviet Union, yet his important legacy shines brighter than ever. At the same time, new research findings are calling into question several long held assumptions in the investigation of Wallenberg's still not fully solved fate. We intend to vigorously pursue many of the new (and old) questions that remain, in both Sweden and Russia, as well as other countries. And we plan to add yet another important one to this growing list:

Why did Raoul Wallenberg ask to go to Moscow in January 1945?

In January 1945, Raoul Wallenberg apparently hoped that the Soviet Marshal Rodion Malinovsky would help him to contact Soviet officials in Moscow "or to go there." The reason for Wallenberg's request is not known. If confirmed, such a request may have heightened the distrust of Soviet military and counterintelligence officers of the young Swedish diplomat. It also possibly affected the Swedish government's response to Wallenberg's disappearance.

I will return with another update shortly - including which concrete steps we plan to pursue and a summary of several very moving and inspiring events that are taking place to honor Raoul Wallenberg's life and accomplishments.

Per Anger once said that what made his friend different is that he was "a true humanitarian." The world desperately needs more Raoul Wallenbergs and courageous souls like Dr. Martin Luther King who is officially remembered todayin the United States for his relentless yet peaceful fight against racism, bigotry and hate. The new US administration cannot begin its work under a better star than to be guided by the spirit of these two men.
