Toronto - On Monday, June 14, 2010, arguments will be presented to the
Court on the critical issue of whether a perpetrator can intervene as
a friend of the court.
In 2007, Ms. Rong Jin filed a civil lawsuit against Chinese Communist
official Bo Xilai during his visit to Canada in October 2007 for the
torture she suffered. The plaintiff has been a practitioner of Falun
Gong, a spiritual practice targeted for severe repression by the
Chinese government.
Although the defendants have ignored the lawsuit, All China Lawyers
Association, a subordinate of the Chinese Justice Department that
serves to control the Chinese lawyers for the regime, and participated
in the persecution of Falun Gong attempted to intervene as a friend of
the Court. The plaintiff opposes the intervention.
The persecution of Falun Gong was carried out through an
extra-judicial and extra-governmental system called “610 Office”
inside the Political and Judicial Committee of the Chinese Communist
Party (CCP) that controls the “Courts”, Public Security Bureau,
Justice Department and the Procuratorate in China. Falun Gong
practitioners were deprived all legal protection.
The hearing comes right before Chinese leader Hu Jintao’s bi-lateral
visit to Canada starting June 21 according to a Chinese media report.
