Burmese Dictator Refuses to Release
Aung San Suu Kyi
- How You Can Help This June -
By United States Campaign for Burma
May 27, 2008

Dear friends,

Today, the Burmese military dictator Than Shwe extended the detention of the world's only imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize recipient Aung San Suu Kyi (pictured at right, in 2003).

Click here if you are new to our list and want to learn about this courageous hero.

Bravely, dozens of members of the National League for Democracy marched to her home try and secure her release and were arrested.

While we are greatly saddened about the detention of Aung San Suu Kyi, we are also pleased that there are over 1,000 news articles throughout the world today documenting her detention.  Whereas a few years ago the world had no idea who Aung San Suu Kyi was, we are now making it harder for the military regime to abuse the Burmese people behind closed doors.

To put this in perspective, Nelson Mandela was virtually ignored by the world for the first two decades of his imprisonment, and it took a dedicated and passionate effort to introduce him to the world and then build powerful international support for his release.  We are leading this effort for Aung San Suu Kyi and the people of Burma.

As part of this effort, hundreds of our supporters are organizing house parties on the weekend before Aung San Suu Kyi's birthday, June 14th and 15th, 2007.

The house parties are easy to organize, and by inviting your friends and family over for food, drinks, and a short film (we will mail you the film), it is a great way to build support for human rights.  We are asking that each party raise at least $300 for US Campaign for Burma, though many will raise thousands.  Most people raise the funds by charging a small admission (15 friends at $20/reach reaches $300 quickly).

If June 14 or the 15th don't work for you, you can choose a different date.  Sign up now!

Thank you again for standing strongly for human rights,

Sincerely,

Aung Din, Jeremy Woodrum, Jennifer Quigley, and Thelma Young
