TORONTO, December 30, 2008 – B'nai Brith Canada extends its congratulations
to the outstanding Canadians named today to the Order of Canada by the
Governor General of Canada , Her Excellency The Right Honourable Michaëlle
Jean. Among those appointed today was B'nai Brith Canada 's Senior Legal
Counsel David Matas.
"B'nai Brith Canada takes special pride in the appointment to the Order of
Canada of David Matas, one of the foremost experts on human rights, refugee
and immigration law, not just in Canada, but in the world," said Frank
Dimant, Executive Vice-President of B'nai Brith Canada. "David is a man who
has dedicated his life to advocating for the human rights of oppressed
minorities across the globe. His commitment and tireless efforts have been
an inspiration to all those who have had the privilege of working with him.
Over the years, David has been active in many human rights and social
justice initiatives, advocating vocally for vulnerable groups, and
spearheading legal/legislative enhancements that benefit all sectors of
society. Active also in political life, he has run as a Liberal candidate
in past federal elections.
